Reports are in that Microsoft are offering to buy Yahoo (the search engine company) for an estimated £22.4 billion in shares and cash.

The offer is understood to have been received by Yahoos board of directors in the form of a letter which is understood to be 62% over Yahoo share price (09-04-08). Yahoo who has been struggling to compete with its closest rival Google, had earlier in the year announced it predicted revenue to be considerably less than previous years and estimated they would have to spend 300 million dollars to revive the company.

Yahoo confirmed that it has received an unsolicited offer and said that its board would evaluate the proposal, “carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo’s strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders.”

Yahoo shares have fallen 46% since reaching a year-high of $34.08 in October. On Friday they closed almost 48% higher.
